Positioning

Who is this device for? Probably for those who want to buy a smartphone with good characteristics, but not for the maximum cost. Price positioning is appropriate, it is minus 25% of the cost of the original prototype (I do not take gray prices into account, since they are not an indicator, more about this in the conclusions).

The S10 Lite model turned out to be interesting, but it is extremely difficult to say whether this device will become a bestseller. We do not have a reference point for such an apparatus. Be it the flagship of the A-series, and I would not have doubts about how it will be sold. But since this is a new positioning, a new model that has never existed in the Samsung lineup, there is a lot of obscurity here. Let’s take a look at the device and evaluate its capabilities.

Design, dimensions, controls
Samsung’s flagships are more or less easy to recognize, but, like with other models, it’s recognizability of the rear panel – the color scheme, the design of the camera unit. In S10 Lite, we see three different colors – blue, black and white.

The case is made of plastic (glastic – plastic resembling glass), it has already been used in the A-series. This is a fairly strong and wear-resistant material. The device is similar to the A-series – good, high-quality performance, but there is no feeling of high cost. It is rather a design similar to the Chinese flagships, clearly a paraphrase of their design and materials.

In S10 Lite there is a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh. On average, I got a day of active work under load at 5.5-6.5 hours of screen operation and with a large amount of data transferred (about 1.5-2 GB per day).

Memory, chipset, performance
The devices use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, this is a difference from the older models, where Exynos comes for Russia. The difference between the chipsets is very arbitrary, the rumor attributes Exynos miraculous properties, but these are solutions of the same level, and Exynos wins in some areas (for example, the pictures from the camera are more interesting).

To say that there are some lags in the UI is simply impossible, everything flies, the interface is very smooth and pleasant. Third-party programs also run without delay, and visually everything is perfect in speed.

The memory here is 6/128 GB, which is slightly less than what the S10 + offers, it has 8 GB of RAM.

Oppo today held an official presentation of its Oppo Reno 3 5G and Reno 3 Pro 5G smartphones. Gadgets received thin cases, high-quality displays and quad cameras.

The more expensive Reno 3 Pro 5G with a curved 6.5-inch AMOLED display (90 GHz screen refresh rate) is based on the Snapdragon 765G chipset and is available in two versions – with 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB or 12 GB RAM and 256 GB drive. The device received a fingerprint sensor – it is built directly into the screen.

A 32 MP selfie camera is located in the upper left corner of the front panel. The main module of the Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G camera consists of four sensors: the main one at 48 MP, 13 MP telephoto cameras with 5x hybrid optical zoom, an 8 MP wide-angle lens and a 2 MP black and white sensor.

Judging by the 4025 mAh battery with support for fast charging at 30 W (charging time, the manufacturer claims, from 0 to 100% will be 56 minutes), the novelty will be able to work for a long time without recharging. The device weighs only 171 grams.

In China, for Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G they will ask for 3999 yuan (571 dollars) for the version with 8 GB of RAM and 4499 yuan (643 dollars) for the version with 12 GB of RAM.

As for the Oppo Reno 3 5G, it has a simpler 6.4-inch Full HD + AMOLED display (not curved). The smartphone is heavier – it weighs 181 grams. The hardware base is the MediaTek Dimensity 1000L chip. The main camera has a different configuration – the main sensor is 64 MP, the wide-angle is 8 MP, the black-and-white sensor is 2 MP and the macro camera is 2 MP. There is no telephoto camera, there is no optical zoom either. The front camera is one-on-one, like the more expensive version, but is located in the tear-shaped cutout in the upper part of the body in the middle. The power supply also has a capacity of 4025 mAh.

The cost of Reno 3 5G starts from 3399 yuan ($ 486) for the version with 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB drive and reaches 3699 yuan ($ 528) for a model with 12 GB and a 128 GB flash drive.

Oppo Reno 3 5G and Reno 3 Pro 5G will be the first smartphones to run on the new version of the ColorOS 7 proprietary user interface (based on Android 10). Both are equipped with speakers that support Dolby Atmos.

The new models are equipped with a high-speed modem capable of working in fifth-generation mobile networks. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

The case thickness is only 8 mm. Reno 2, introduced a few months ago, was much thicker (9.5 mm).

Sales of Oppo Reno 3 5G and Reno Pro 5G with 8 GB of RAM will start on December 31, 2019. More expensive versions with 12 GB of RAM will appear in stores on January 10 of next year. But it is in China. When new items enter the world market is not reported.

Introduction
OPPO introduced the flagship smartphone model called Find X2. Previously, the Find X series of devices was technologically unique and breakthrough. In a way, Find Xs were concepts for sale.

Today, Oppo’s strategy has changed: everything is aimed at satisfying ordinary users. Actually, that’s why there is nothing extraordinary in Find X2 – it is a relatively familiar smartphone on a modern chassis.

Find X2 highlights several key features:

Large screen with support for 120 Hz, HDR 10+ and hardware “acceleration” of Ultra Vision Engone content.
Cameras. They installed a 5x hybrid zoom, a 48 MP main camera and a wide-angle lens with a Sony IMX708 sensor.
Fast charge 65 W, allowing you to energize your smartphone up to 60% in just 15 minutes.
Powerful processor. Of course, this is Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with all that it implies.
For Russia, 5G support will be disabled by hardware, and if you are planning to go to Europe or the USA, where the 5th generation network will function, then 5G in Find X2 will still not work.

Immediately after the presentation, OPPO opened a pre-order for the device. The cost at the time of writing is unknown (probably we are talking about 70,000 rubles). Will appear on sale in about a month.

Appearance, controls
The novelty has received the classic design that we have seen over the past years: an impressive-sized case, smooth corners and, of course (much without them!), A screen with curved edges. The frames are made of metal, and the sides are made of glass.

The device is elongated, but still quite thick – about 8 mm. It’s good in the hand, but it’s such a pleasure to use a display that floats on the side faces. Handsomely? Undoubtedly! Practical? Not at all. Even the ancestor of this disgrace – Samsung – in the new devices used flat screens with a slight 2.5D rounding.

From the specifications you could understand that the AMOLED matrix is used here, the screen diagonal is 6.7 inches. The resolution is high – QHD +, that is, 3168 × 1440 pixels.

It is worth highlighting support for HDR10 + and 10 bit color, the refresh rate of the screen is 60 or 120 Hz. Moreover, the frequency of 120 Hz can be selected without restrictions: whether it is screen resolution, high brightness of the matrix or the launch of the game. The main thing is that the application has the ability to display a picture at 120 Hz.

If you use the Oppo Find X2 for several hours at a frequency of 120 Hz and pick up a regular smartphone with 60 Hz, it seems that the old device is a complete brake. That is, a high refresh rate is not marketing. At least I clearly see the difference between 60 and 120 Hz. This is expressed in the output of a very smooth image.

In addition, the sensor has a response of 240 Hz: it will be even more interesting to play shooters.

Another innovation is the Ultra Vision Engine processor. A hardware solution for motion compensation and HDR display. In the first case, the chip completes the missing frames in the video. This only works in streaming services or games. Writing a movie to memory and playing with high smoothness will not work.

Battery
The new Oppo Find X2 has a 4200 mAh battery. As I understand it, two 2100 mAh batteries are built inside the device.

The manufacturer claims that the battery should last for exactly one business day. However, accurate data and measurements are not yet available. Personally, I am confused by the small capacity and operation of the screen with a resolution of QHD + at 120 Hz. There is a feeling that we will get 3-4 hours of screen glow. However, we will not guess: in a week I will give you a full test of the device.

The network adapter received a powerful upgrade – 65 W (5V / 2A, 10V / 6.5A). This energy flow allows you to charge the phone up to 60% in just 15 minutes, and in 40 minutes – up to 100%. Naturally, the kit comes with a thick USB cable.

The smartphone has many protective measures, including that it understands when an original cable is used for charging. In this case, the current will be limited.

There is no wireless charging.

“Iron”
Here it’s literally a short line, because at first glance you can’t test a lot. The processor, as expected, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, RAM 12 GB, internal memory 256 GB.

The speed of RAM is 17 500 MB / s. In fact, not very much. We will write to the final software. The speed of the internal memory is 1300/630 MB / s – this is already an excellent speed!

In the Antutu benchmark, the Oppo Find X2 smartphone (QHD +, 120 Hz) is gaining almost 600,000 points. Heating was from 31 to 37 degrees.

Impressions
I spent several hours with the device and here is what I can say from the results of a short test:

  • The curved screen is not the best solution
  • The lack of wireless charging is a strange thing in 2020 for the flagship
  • Cameras without frills. If it were an inexpensive smartphone, then there would be enough opportunities. And in the flagship I would like to zoom more than 2x optical. Where are the modules on 64 MP or even 108 MP?

Snapdragon 720g vs Snapdragon 730g

Both mobile platforms provide smooth gameplay on mid-range smartphones.

Following the launch of the Snapdragon 730G processor last year, Qualcomm released another new Snapdragon 720G processor. As the mobile gaming market is growing very fast, Qualcomm is trying to keep up and is developing low-cost gaming systems on a chip. As you can see, at the end of the model name there is a prefix “G”, which means that these are game processors for middle-class smartphones.

Also now there are not many devices on the market with a price tag from 13,000 to 15,000 rubles that work on Qualcomm and have good gaming performance. And the prices for smartphones with Snapdragon 730G are currently starting at 16,000 rubles. Thus, the new 720G processor should fill this gap. The new model in terms of specifications is not much different from the 730G, but there are still minor differences between them, which I will discuss in detail in this article.

Kernels
The main difference between the Snapdragon 730G and 720G is in the cores. Although both processors are eight-core, they have a different architecture and clock speed. If the Snapdragon 720G has the Kryo 465 architecture, then the Snapdragon 730G boasts the more advanced Kryo 470.

If you go into the details of comparing cores, then the Snapdragon 720G has 8 cores. Two cores (Cortex-A76) are Kryo 465 Gold with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz, and the remaining 6 cores (Cortex-A55) are Kryo 465 Gold with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz.

And, although the Snapdragon 730G has the same number of cores, their clock speed is slightly lower. In the Snapdragon 730G, 2 cores (Cortex-A76) are Kryo 465 Gold with a clock frequency of 2.2 GHz, the remaining 6 (Cortex-A55) are Kryo 470 Silver with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz.

As you can already understand, the performance of these two processors is about the same. Due to the better architecture, the Snapdragon 730G will have a slight advantage (several percent performance), but a higher clock speed of 720G will make single-threaded work with this processor as fast as with the 730G. Therefore, I believe that in this pair it is better to choose Snapdragon 720G, especially if you want to save.

Video card
As for the video card, both of these processors use the same Adreno 618 graphics processor. But the Snapdragon 730G graphics card is overclocked by 15%. Both chipsets also offer several advanced features that provide smoother gameplay. As for the API, the Snapdragon 730G supports the DX12 API, which is not supported by the 720G GPU. Thus, in terms of video card performance, I can say that the Snapdragon 730G is slightly ahead of 720G.

Both processors are manufactured using an 8nm process. So there is nothing to compare.

Display
In terms of refresh rate, both processors have the same maximum – 60 Hz. Since these are mid-range processors, they do not support a refresh rate of 90 Hz or higher. As for the maximum resolution of the display, both 720G and 730G support resolutions up to Quad HD + and HDR10.

So in this area both of these processors have the same characteristics.

Camera
There are also no differences between the chipsets. You can count on the same ISP (Image Signal Processor), the Snapdragon 730G uses the Qualcomm 2X 14-bit Spectra 350 ISP, while the Snapdragon 720G uses the Qualcomm 2X 14-bit Spectra 350 ISP.

Both processors are capable of multi-frame noise reduction up to 48 MP (on one sensor). However, there are some differences.

Snapdragon 730G:
for one sensor: multi-frame noise reduction and delay of zero shutter at 30 frames per second up to 36MP
for two sensors: multi-frame noise reduction and delay of zero shutter at a speed of 30 frames per second up to 22MP
Snapdragon 720G:

In addition, both of these processors are capable of recording 4K UHD video at 30 frames per second. In the “slow motion” mode they are capable of shooting in 1080p quality at a speed of 120 frames per second, in 720p quality at a speed of 240 frames per second and in 720p quality at a speed of 960 frames per second with frame rate conversion.

Memory
Both Qualcomm gaming chipsets support the UFS 2.1 universal flash drive. As for RAM, both processors support dual-channel LPDDR4X up to 8 GB at a frequency of 1866 MHz. Thus, both of these models are completely identical in this aspect.

Communication

Both of these processors use the same Snapdragon X15 LTE modem. The edge download speed is up to 800 Mbit / s, upload speed up to 150 Mbit / s in a 4G LTE network.

In addition, both chips support Bluetooth 5.0, Dual 4G VoLTE, USB 3.1 and Quick Charge 4. Yes, both processors will not support 5G.

AI engine

Perhaps the main question that almost everyone will be asked is the numbering of models, why we immediately jumped from the tenth generation to the twentieth. At Samsung, this is explained by the fact that the S20 in all variants is a completely new platform, therefore, to emphasize the changes, it was decided to make such a leap in the name. The explanation has the right to life, but ordinary people will see exactly S11 in all these variations in these models, since the changes in comparison with 10s are not so huge. All devices remained exactly the same style, they feel like flesh and blood of the Samsung line. There is no fundamentally new software (OneUI 2.1, on the current flagships and not only on them version 2.0 of the interface). The same body materials that we have been accustomed to over the years are metal and Gorilla Glass 6. Other sizes due to different displays, and changed batteries.

Perhaps this is the history of 5G, since all devices support this technology by default? Maybe. But for many markets, including the Russian one, this is still technology for the near future, there are no networks as such, and it will not work to take advantage of 5G at home. It would be logical for some models to become cheaper by depriving them of a 5G modem, since it costs decent money, but they assured me that this would not happen. And without exception, the devices will be with him, only somewhere these features will be software disabled – and when you travel to another country with 5G networks, you will automatically get a modem and new speeds. The story sounds beautiful, especially in light of the fact that Samsung wants to become number one in sales of 5G devices in 2020, and I think that this will happen. But the market will clearly make its own adjustments, and we will not see S20 5G smartphones,

Updating the screens also does not look something like this: support for 120 Hz has appeared, the touch layer is 240 Hz. Good? Perhaps. But this is not something so unique as to talk about aspirated changes. Exactly the same situation with cameras – they are excellent, new features will please users, but they are perceived as expected.

First look at the Galaxy S20 / S20 + / S20 Ultra and the updated Galaxy Buds +
Perhaps I picked the right word – the expected. What people expected in the S20 is the expected changes from generation to generation, they do not have any kind of leap in technology that would be critical. A year ago, when the “tens” were shown, everything was about the same, the cost of devices increased, and the number of fundamental changes was reduced, it became small. The situation is about the same here, and they are trying to neutralize this point with marketing, because 20 is more than 10, and the company could not name its devices for nothing. In some ways, there is a paraphrase with Huawei that initially went into the “tens”, where “progress” was noticeable to the naked eye.

Therefore, it is worth underestimating expectations from the S20 of all options, a miracle could not happen, these are not fundamentally new devices in which something unimaginable appeared. This is a good, ongoing development of the line, but not something more.

The emphasis in the “twenty” is placed on those who like to create something new, that is, it is again a camera. The company claims that it is the quality of the cameras that is what people demand from the new flagships, only in 2019 polls showed an increase in the influence of this parameter on the choice of device by 1687%! And the main reasons for upgrading their device were called:

The ability to shoot in poor lighting conditions;
Moving objects, such as children and dogs;
Possibility of optical or digital zoom with high-quality picture on the output.
Therefore, Samsung also focused on cameras in the new line, plus various AI algorithms were added to add visual acuity, as well as new features. We’ll talk about cameras and functions separately, but, looking ahead, I’ll note that this is one of the first devices with 8K video, which goes well with the company’s line of TVs. Now the interconnection of different devices is becoming apparent.

The models of the previous season remain on the market, they do not go anywhere. Prices will change on them not as much as we would like, they will become more affordable, but new items come out at a price comparable to what we saw at the start of sales a year ago. In the new row, there was no place for a compact smartphone like the S10e, since the latter remains on the market, it does not go anywhere. The entire line of flagships is built into the lineup from above, expanding it. And this immediately suggests that the high cost will automatically lead to the fact that the popularity of previous models will grow, but new ones will not be able to be sold in the same volumes. These are the laws of the market, the more expensive the model, the less demand for it.

Design, dimensions, controls
The tendencies that each successive flagship should be larger than the previous ones cannot be canceled – manufacturers have become hostages of their approach. I love large devices, the larger the screen, the better – but the question is how the proportions of the device change. So, in the S20 Ultra, the screen is 6.9 inches, which is a record for a smartphone in an ordinary, monolithic case. But the height of the device became 166.9 mm, which is also a lot, it is elongated vertically.

It is impossible to reach the upper edge with one hand, there are many inconveniences. This is a two-handed device. In the S20 / S20 + everything is easier, they are more familiar, although the S20 + is also high, but not a shoulder, the width is comfortable for each model, it is easy to grasp them.

I’m somewhat surprised at how persistently Samsung makes a metal edging for the camera unit; in any case, this line gets jammed, over time, if you don’t use the case, the paint peels off and becomes silver.
