Snapdragon 720g vs Snapdragon 730g

Both mobile platforms provide smooth gameplay on mid-range smartphones.

Following the launch of the Snapdragon 730G processor last year, Qualcomm released another new Snapdragon 720G processor. As the mobile gaming market is growing very fast, Qualcomm is trying to keep up and is developing low-cost gaming systems on a chip. As you can see, at the end of the model name there is a prefix ā€œGā€, which means that these are game processors for middle-class smartphones.

Also now there are not many devices on the market with a price tag from 13,000 to 15,000 rubles that work on Qualcomm and have good gaming performance. And the prices for smartphones with Snapdragon 730G are currently starting at 16,000 rubles. Thus, the new 720G processor should fill this gap. The new model in terms of specifications is not much different from the 730G, but there are still minor differences between them, which I will discuss in detail in this article.

Kernels
The main difference between the Snapdragon 730G and 720G is in the cores. Although both processors are eight-core, they have a different architecture and clock speed. If the Snapdragon 720G has the Kryo 465 architecture, then the Snapdragon 730G boasts the more advanced Kryo 470.

If you go into the details of comparing cores, then the Snapdragon 720G has 8 cores. Two cores (Cortex-A76) are Kryo 465 Gold with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz, and the remaining 6 cores (Cortex-A55) are Kryo 465 Gold with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz.

And, although the Snapdragon 730G has the same number of cores, their clock speed is slightly lower. In the Snapdragon 730G, 2 cores (Cortex-A76) are Kryo 465 Gold with a clock frequency of 2.2 GHz, the remaining 6 (Cortex-A55) are Kryo 470 Silver with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz.

As you can already understand, the performance of these two processors is about the same. Due to the better architecture, the Snapdragon 730G will have a slight advantage (several percent performance), but a higher clock speed of 720G will make single-threaded work with this processor as fast as with the 730G. Therefore, I believe that in this pair it is better to choose Snapdragon 720G, especially if you want to save.

Video card
As for the video card, both of these processors use the same Adreno 618 graphics processor. But the Snapdragon 730G graphics card is overclocked by 15%. Both chipsets also offer several advanced features that provide smoother gameplay. As for the API, the Snapdragon 730G supports the DX12 API, which is not supported by the 720G GPU. Thus, in terms of video card performance, I can say that the Snapdragon 730G is slightly ahead of 720G.

Both processors are manufactured using an 8nm process. So there is nothing to compare.

Display
In terms of refresh rate, both processors have the same maximum – 60 Hz. Since these are mid-range processors, they do not support a refresh rate of 90 Hz or higher. As for the maximum resolution of the display, both 720G and 730G support resolutions up to Quad HD + and HDR10.

So in this area both of these processors have the same characteristics.

Camera
There are also no differences between the chipsets. You can count on the same ISP (Image Signal Processor), the Snapdragon 730G uses the Qualcomm 2X 14-bit Spectra 350 ISP, while the Snapdragon 720G uses the Qualcomm 2X 14-bit Spectra 350 ISP.

Both processors are capable of multi-frame noise reduction up to 48 MP (on one sensor). However, there are some differences.

Snapdragon 730G:
for one sensor: multi-frame noise reduction and delay of zero shutter at 30 frames per second up to 36MP
for two sensors: multi-frame noise reduction and delay of zero shutter at a speed of 30 frames per second up to 22MP
Snapdragon 720G:

for one sensor: multi-frame noise reduction and delay of zero shutter at 30 frames per second up to 32MP
for two sensors: multi-frame noise reduction and delay of zero shutter at a speed of 30 frames per second up to 16MP
In addition, both of these processors are capable of recording 4K UHD video at 30 frames per second. In the “slow motion” mode they are capable of shooting in 1080p quality at a speed of 120 frames per second, in 720p quality at a speed of 240 frames per second and in 720p quality at a speed of 960 frames per second with frame rate conversion.

Memory
Both Qualcomm gaming chipsets support the UFS 2.1 universal flash drive. As for RAM, both processors support dual-channel LPDDR4X up to 8 GB at a frequency of 1866 MHz. Thus, both of these models are completely identical in this aspect.

Communication

Both of these processors use the same Snapdragon X15 LTE modem. The edge download speed is up to 800 Mbit / s, upload speed up to 150 Mbit / s in a 4G LTE network.

In addition, both chips support Bluetooth 5.0, Dual 4G VoLTE, USB 3.1 and Quick Charge 4. Yes, both processors will not support 5G.

AI engine
It’s hard enough to say which processor is the best in this regard. In addition, the Snapdragon 720G features the Qualcomm Sensing Hub and Qualcomm Hexagon Scalar Accelerator, which the 730G doesn’t have.
